Fishing On Mount Desert Island

On Mount Desert Island, freshwater fishing for warm water species such as pickerel, smallmouth bass as well as white and yellow perch can be satisfying and fun. They are quite plentiful in several lakes where boats can easily be put in. Lakes to try include Long Pond, Hamilton Pond and Seal Cove Pond.

Fishing for salmon and lake trout can be challenging in the summer because they are cold water fish and are very deep in the warmer months.

Open Water (not Ice) fishing season is generally from April 1 to September 30 (some exceptions apply). Be sure to pick up a copy of the fishing regulations to be sure you are complying with all the laws. They vary from county to county and pond to pond. Regulation booklets are available at licensing locations or from:

Non-Resident Saltwater Fishing License Regulations

No license is required for salt water fishing. Mackerel and Bluefish can be caught (when they are running) along Sargent Drive on Somes Sound or Frazer Point on the Schoodic Peninsula.

CAUTION: Be very careful when fishing off rocks. Seaweed and algae covered rocks are extremely slippery. Also, never turn your back on the ocean when near the edge - an unusually high wave can suddenly crash onto the rocks and knock you over and even wash you into the ocean. Never fish alone.

There are several charter boats that will take parties out into the bay of Maine for deep sea fishing. Check the recreation section of this Web Site.
